In the folklorico costume for Nuevo Leon, men wear the leather fringed vests or coats, boots, bandanas and cowboy hats. The fringe on the men's jackets are meant to imitate the moving feathers of a The women wear clothes straight out of "The Sound of Music". Their hair is braided with ribbons. The style of dance: polkas, waltzes and chotize, or "schottische". The tuba sound in Mexican/Tejano music was improvised by base guitars and the accordion was introduced. The accordion in Tejano conjunto music was mostly used by the common labor working people; not to be confused with Tejano orchestra music which was influenced by mariachis and the big band sounds of the 40s considered to be more urbanized. Much of the original Tejano music was based on ballads or corridos from Mexican revolutions; another oral history form, such as: Adelita, Tiempos Amargos, El Cuartelozo. To the north of Mexico dances are done to a different style of music brought to Mexico during the colonial period mainly from Poland and Germany with the names of Chotis, Redoblado, and Polka. Throughout the Revolution period these dance styles were quite prominent in Nuevo Leon and each social class participated in these dances during fiesta times. Polka steps and movements are very fast. When the Germans came, they settled mostly in the Texas hill country and Nuevo Leon. Unlike the hill country Germans who were mostly agricultural, the latter settled in Nuevo Leon to also establish breweries. Their influence in Texas country-western music and Tejano music is unmistakable but often overlooked. The women wear very vibrant colored & short dresses. Their partners wear leather jackets with fringe embellishments. The movement of this fringe resembles a bird native to Nuevo Leon called Grulla or Crane.
